CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois (33-18) scored six runs in the second inning en route to a 8-1 win over South Dakota State (15-33) earlier today at Abe Martin Field. The win gave SIU head coach Dan Callahan his most victories in a season.
SIU pounded out seven hits to fuel its six-run rout in the second.
Erik Alvarez singled and Matt Brewer was hit by a pitch to start the one-out rally. After both runners advanced on a passed ball, Ryan Hypke singled to center, and Alvarez scored. Tyler Lairson's single scored Brewer on the next play, which was followed by back-to-back base knocks from Kevin Koski and P.J. Finigan.
Moments after Finigan's hit plated Hypke, Nathan Emrick grounded out to short, and Lairson touched home. Hunter Harrigan's two-RBI single then drove in both Koski and Finigan to give SIU a 6-0 lead.
SIU added a couple more runs in the fifth, where it loaded the bases with two outs, before Lairson smacked a two-RBI single to push the Salukis' lead to 8-0.
With the help of a two-out error in the seventh, SDSU was able to avoid the shutout when Chris Iverson scored after Saluki catcher Hunter Harrigan dropped a third strike and overthrew Alvarez at first.
Finigan (8-2) earned his team-leading eighth win of the season after scattering four hits and striking out seven in seven innings. He threw six shutout innings, no-hit the Jackrabbits for three frames and went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI as well.
Christian Larson (2-4) suffered the loss for SDSU. Larson left the game after 1.2 innings, where he gave up eight hits and six runs.
Along with Finigan, Lairson also had two hits to lead the Salukis offensively.
A freshman out of Richmond, Ind., Lairson finished at 2-for-4 with a run scored and game-high three RBI. Finigan and Lairson combined for four of SIU's 10 hits on the day.
Additionally, Koski added one hit to keep his hitting streak alive at 27 games.
SIU concludes its series against SDSU tomorrow at 1 p.m. Bryan Rueger (7-3) is scheduled to start on the mound for the Dawgs.
