O'FALLON, Mo. - Freshman Ryan Terry scattered three hits and struck out six in six sparkling innings to lead Southern Illinois (35-18) to a 7-0 blanking of No. 20 Missouri (34-18) earlier tonight in a wood bat game at T.R. Hughes Stadium.
Come out swinging and get a quality start from Terry appeared to be the gameplan, and SIU executed both to perfection.
Red-hot Kevin Koski immediately shifted the momentum SIU's way after hitting MU right-hander Nick Admire's first pitch of the game for a double to left center. Koski, who extended his hitting streak to 29 games, has now hit safely during his first at-bat in five of the last six games.
Koski went to third when P.J. Finigan grounded out to second, and scored on a wild pitch to give the Salukis a 1-0 lead.
Shortly after the quick surge, Terry took things over from there, and merely carved up the Tigers.
In his seventh midweek start and first since tossing seven shutout innings in the Dawgs' last wood bat game against Saint Louis on May 4, Terry struck out six, including five looking.
A native of Palmyra, Mich., he also limited MU to only three hits and retired 17 of 20 after two Tigers reached base against him in the first.
With Terry cruising through MU's lineup, SIU's offense gave him plenty more runs to work with.
Especially, in the middle innings, where the Salukis scored one in the fourth and fifth, and two in the sixth.
Despite falling behind 1-2 in the count, Hunter Harrigan led off the fourth with a solo homer to left.
An inning later, the Salukis scored again with the help of a two-out walk, stolen base and an error.
Then, in the sixth, three consecutive two-out hits from Tyler Lairson, Koski and Finigan led to two more runs to push SIU's lead to 5-0.
Still not finished, the Dawgs added two other runs with the help of a one-out single by Matt Brewer, a stolen base, two walks and another MU error in the eighth to polish off the Tigers for good.
Terry, who also walked one, improved to 5-0 on the season.
He was relieved by Adam Snyder in the seventh, who retired nine of the last 10 MU hitters of the game. A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Snyder gave up a hit to his first batter, James Boone, in the seventh, but after that, he retired nine in a row, while striking out four along the way. Snyder earned his team-leading fourth save of the season.
Admire (2-2) gave up six hits and three runs in 4.2 innings. He also walked one and struck out two.
Offensively, several Salukis had multiple-hits, including Dean Cademartori, Koski, Harrigan and Brewer. Cademartori went 3-for-5 with two doubles, Koski went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a double, Harrigan went 2-for-5 with his second home run of the season, a RBI and run scored, and Brewer finished at 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Finigan also had three RBI for the Dawgs, who outhit MU, 11-4.
Defensively, the Tigers struggled to five errors, including two which came by way of catcher's interference. MU's Derek Chambers was also ejected for arguing balls and strikes.
SIU, who extended its winning streak to six games, moved to 4-1 against MU under head coach Dan Callahan. Tonight's win also marked the Dawgs' second over a Top-25 opponent this season.
In addition, the Salukis handed the Tigers their first shutout of the season.
The Salukis conclude their 2005 regular-season at home when they host Illinois State in a three-game series, beginning Thursday at 3 p.m.
