CARSON, Calif. - Southern Illinois University's Amarachi Ukabam finished eighth among the world's best in the women's discus open at the 2005 USA Track and Field Championships Thursday night. Ukabam threw 182 feet, four inches, her second-best throw of the year, to beat Rachel Longfors from Florida and Rachel Varner from Alabama who finished 1-2 in the discus two weeks ago at the NCAA Championships.
Ukabam, a junior from Creve Coeur, Mo., will also compete in the women's shot put open at 7 p.m. Friday. Teammate Shelby Brice will run in the junior-level 5000-meter run Friday at 10:30 p.m. and the 3000-meter steeplechase Saturday at 6 p.m.
Fellow thrower, Brittany Riley, won the junior-level hammer throw Thursday morning to advance to the 2005 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships July 28-31 in Ontario, Canada.
