Five Saluki Student-Athletes Tabbed 2005 CoSIDA Academic All-District

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University landed five athletes on 2005 CoSIDA Academic All-District teams. Saluki diver Andrea Johnson, and tennis athletes, Tana Trapani, Alexandru Nomicos and Lukasz Soswa were named to the Men's and Women's Division I District V At-Large Teams, while cross country runner Noa Beitler was named to the Cross Country/Track and Field District V Team.
Johnson was named to the women's first team, maintaining a 4.00 grade point average in special education. The senior from Elburn, Ill. finished in the top 10 in 17 of 18 meets during the 2004-05 season, earning All-Missouri Valley Conference honors for the second-consecutive season in the 1-meter dive.
Trapani, a senior from Murphysboro, Ill., posted a 4.00 in accounting to earn her second-consecutive First-Team All-District V honor. The two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete fought injury to record a 5-5 singles record and an 8-4 doubles record. She holds the school record for career doubles wins (63) and career winning percentage (.831).
Nomicos and Soswa earned second-team honors. Nomicos, a senior from Targoviste, Romania, posted a 4.00 grade point average in accounting while recording a 3-10 singles record and 4-4 doubles record. Soswa, a senior from Surrey, British Columbia, was 10-8 this season in singles competition and finishes his career at SIU ranked in the top ten in career wins. In four years at SIU, he has maintained a 3.93 grade point average while majoring in pre-medicine.
Beitler, a nine-time MVC champion, earned her second first-team all-district honor. The senior from Rehovot, Israel, graduated with a 4.00 in art and design. She earned three top-20 finishes in cross country during the 2004 season and owns three school records in the indoor and outdoor 800 meter run and the indoor mile.
To qualify for nomination, each student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have reached sophomore athletic or academic standing. Each athlete must also compete in at least 50 percent of each team's competitions. All first-team all-district athletes will be eligible for Academic All-American honors.
