CARBONDALE, Ill. - Baseball America predicts Southern Illinois as one of 39 teams that will join its preseason top-25 in the 2006 NCAA Tournament field.
"Although we all know what actually counts is at the end of the season, it's nice to be recognized," said Saluki head coach Dan Callahan.
Baseball America's preseason top-25 consists of Texas, Clemson, Florida, Georgia Tech, Cal State Fullerton, North Carolina, Rice, Oregon State, Tennessee, Missouri, Pepperdine, Tulane, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Florida State, Arizona State, Southern California, Arkansas, Texas Christian, Louisiana State, Fresno State, Long Beach State, Mississippi, North Carolina State and California.
The Salukis, along with Alabama, Army, Austin Peay, Arizona, Baylor, Cal Poly, College of Charleston, Florida Atlantic, Georgia, Harvard, Houston, Illinois-Chicago, Kansas, Lemar, Le Moyne, Maine, Miami, Miami (Ohio), Nebraska, Notre Dame, North Carolina A&T, UNC Wilmington, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Oral Roberts, Purdue, Quinnipiac, Richmond, San Diego, South Alabama, South Florida, Southern, Southern Mississippi, Stanford, Stetson, Virginia, Wichita State and Winthrop are the others expected to make this year's 64-team tournament.
SIU also received votes in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's Fabulous 40 Preseason Poll earlier this month.
