CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Student Athletic Advisory Committee will begin the SIU Pride Initiative this week across the Carbondale campus.
The SAAC and all Saluki student-athletes will travel around campus with sweat shirts and hooded sweat shirts seeking SIU students wearing sweat shirts that support other universities. Those students will be asked to swap their sweat shirt with a new student-designed Saluki athletics shirt purchased from 710 Bookstore.
The SIU Pride Initiative, with financial assistance from Chancellor Walter Wendler, will donate all of the sweat shirts they trade to the Southern Illinois Women's Center in each student's name.
"I'm very supportive of the program's effort to build pride on campus," Wendler said. "It instills pride in our institution."
SAAC president Nick Hill returned from the 2006 NCAA Leadership Conference in May looking to make a difference across the campus. This is just one of many new programs the SIU SAAC hope to initiate throughout the school year.
"I think the SIU Pride Initiative is a good way for student athletes to be seen on campus and increase Saluki pride," Hill said. "We're proud of SIU and our athletic programs. The students that participate will show their support of our mission and donate to a good cause."
