STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Southern Illinois (5-1) softball team suffered its first loss of the season Friday at the hands of Mississippi State (7-0), 2-0, in the team's second game of the Mississippi State Invitational.
The Salukis were held to just four hits, the lowest total of the season.
Bulldog pitcher Ragan Blake gave up just one hit through the first five innings, retiring 14 straight Saluki batters, including five strikeouts.
Jayme Wamsley, Lauren Haas, Chelsea Petty and Tiffanie Dismore each salvaged a hit for the Salukis.
Haas and Petty picked up back-to-back singles in the bottom of the seventh, but a deep hit to left field from Katie Louis was caught near the warning track for the second out of the inning, ending the Salukis' only offensive surge of the night.
Saluki pitcher Cassidy Scoggins gave up just two runs on six hits, striking out six to bring her season total to 23 in just four appearances. Scoggins also picked up her first earned run of the season in 21.1 innings.
Earlier Friday, Southern opened the Invitational with an 8-0 win over Tennessee State in six innings.
The Salukis recorded their third shutout of the season behind a career-high nine strikeouts from Ashley Hamby and errorless defense.
Wamsley, Haas and Louis led the SIU offense with two hits apiece. Haas picked up two RBI, while Wamsley and Louis added one each. Krystal Stein picked up one hit, one RBI and two stolen bases, scoring two Saluki runs.
The Salukis resume play Saturday at 10 a.m. when they take on East Tennessee State at the MSU Softball Field.
