Women's Golf finishes 14th at Islander Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Southern Illinois women's golf team opened the spring season at the Islander Spring Classic, where they finished 14th in the 16-team field. The tournament was played at the Corpus Christi Country Club, a par-72, 6,110 yard course. The Salukis combined total for the 54-hole competition was 963.
The team was led by Josie Lowder, who finished tied for 25th place shooting a 233 over the two day competition. Lowder's final round was her best shooting a 2-over 75.
After day one of play the Salukis saw themselves in fifteenth place, with a team total of 652. Golf coach Diane Daugherty knew that was not the position she thought the team would be in, but was pleased with the improvement throughout the tournament.
"We started off slow and basically shot ourselves in the foot," Daugherty said. "But in the course of one day, we got a whole lot better, and have a good base to build on."
Christine Zoerlein came in tied for 31st with a three-round total of 236. Zoerlein shot the low-round for the team when she carded a 73 earlier today.
Samantha Sutzer, Braidy Hood, and Abbigail Johnson all shot a 249 putting them in 70th place.
Arkansas-Little Rock won the tournament with a score of 899, while Camila Sola of Redlands Community College finished first overall with a 907 total.
The other Missouri Valley Conference schools in the tournament were Bradley and Missouri State, who finished fourth and sixth respectively.
The Salukis return to action March 2-4 at the East/West Rio Verde Invitational.
