ST. LOUIS - For the first time this season, the #25 Southern Illinois University softball team sweeps the Missouri Valley Conference weekly honors. Junior pitcher Cassidy Scoggins earns MVC Pitcher of the Week honors while sophomore Lauren Haas is named MVC Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Scoggins, a Owasso, Okla. native, earns MVC Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time this season. She is only the second pitcher this year to earn the honor twice. Haas, a native of Bremerton, Wash., picks up MVC Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career.
Scoggins was a perfect 5-0 for the Salukis last week, shutting out her opponents as she finished the week with a 0.00 ERA. She has not given up a run in 28 innings, striking out 36 batters in that period of time while giving up only one walk.
Her opponent batting average for the week was a paltry .132. She pitched three complete-game shutout victories last week while winning two games in relief.
In the 2-0 shutout win over Indiana State on Friday, Scoggins neared her career high in strikeouts of 13 as she sent 12 batters away in the game. The game was her fifth of the season in which she threw double digit strikeouts.
Following her performance for the week, her overall ERA dropped to a MVC-leading 0.89. With the wins this week, she improves to 22-6 on the season. Her 22 wins mover her to 55 all time, placing her sixth at SIU in career wins. Her 22 this season also rank tied for fourth all-time at SIU in single-season wins.
Haas' bat was the spark that lifted the Salukis through the week and has them currently on a five-game winning streak. She batted .467 (7-for-15) for the week with a 1.067 slugging percentage.
Of her seven hits, she had a double, a triple and two home runs. She also led the team for the week with seven RBI. Haas also drew a walk during the week, giving her a .500 on-base percentage.
Her best performances of the week game in the second Evansville game and the third Indiana State game. She was a key component in SIU's come-from-behind win over Evansville as she hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, tying the game and giving SIU a chance to win.
She went 3-for-4 at the plate in that game with two extra-base hits.
In the third Indiana State game, she was 2-for-3 at the plate with both hits being for extra bases - a triple and a home run.
Haas also got it done on the field for the Salukis. She started all five games with three being in the infield. While playing the key positions of third base and shortstop, she finished the week error-free.
The Salukis return to action with a pair of mid-week games this week. SIU gets things going Tuesday, April 18 with a single game at the University of Missouri at 2 p.m. The game is a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament.
SIU will then complete its three-game series with Evansville, playing a single game at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 19 in Evansville, Ind.
