WICHITA, Kan. - After 36 holes at the State Farm MVC Women's Golf Championship the Southern Illinois women's golf team is in fourth place. SIU had a two round team total of 612, just one stroke behind host Wichita State.
Junior Samantha Sutzer is tied for fourth place to lead the Salukis. In the first round Sutzer carded a one-over-par 73 and a 77 in the second set of 18 holes. She is tied with Samantha Richdale of Illinois State.
Sophomore Christine Zoerlein joins Sutzer in the top-10 as she is in a three-way tie for ninth. Zoerlein, the runner-up from 2005, shot a 77 and 76 for a first day total of 153.
Josie Lowder is tied for 18th place after shooting a 79 in the first round and a 77 in the second round. Freshman Braidy Hood is three strokes behind Lowder with a 80, 79=159. Abbigail Johnson and Kate Laegeler are both tied for 30th with a total of 160.
"I'm very pleased with our performance today," Saluki golf coach Diane Daugherty said. "Those are our two lowest rounds of the year. We are only five shots out of first and four shots out of seventh so tomorrow is a very important day."
The defending champions Illinois State lead by the narrowest of margins over the pre-championship favorite Bradley by a single stroke, 607 to 608, with the final 18 holes to go on Tuesday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on the par-72 layout at Reflection Ridge Golf Club in Wichita, Kan.
It's one of the tightest tournaments in league history, as 11 strokes separate first place from sixth place. Missy Linnens of Missouri State and Stef Nelson of UNI share the individual lead with scores of three-over-par 147 through 36 holes.
The final round will begin Tuesday morning. Live stats are available throughout the tournament at www.golfstat.com.
