WICHITA, Kan. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team took third at the 2006 State Farm MVC Women's Golf Championship. SIU finished with a 54-hole total of 922, only five strokes behind runner-up Illinois State. The favorite Bradley came away with the first place trophy and the individual champion Meaghan LeBlanc.
Junior Samantha Sutzer finished in seventh place after shooting a 79 in the final round. Her tournament total was 229.
"Sam had a very solid tournament," Saluki golf coach Diane Daugherty said. "I am very proud of our team."
Freshman Braidy Hood moved up drastically after the first day by carding a one-over-par 73 in the final round to join Sutzer in the top ten. Hood had a three round total of 232 and tied for tenth.
"Braidy's 73 today was great," Daugherty said. "We are a young team. We were picked to finish fourth, but we were in contention the whole time. It was close and came down to the wire."
Sophomore Christine Zoerlein, the individual runner-up from 2005 tied for 13th tallying 233 over the 2-day tournament. Junior Josie Lowder carded an 80 on the day and took 20th. Kate Laegeler tied for 22nd and was just two strokes behind Lowder with 238. Abbigail Johnson also shot an 80 and tied for 28th overall. Johnson's three day total was 240.
"This tournament is a really great jump start for next year is how I look at it," said Daugherty. "We get Kelly Gerlach back, we have a transfer student, plus we have all our team back from this tournament. Next year should be our year."
The Salukis moved up from fourth place after the first two rounds by shooting a 310 in the final 18 holes. Northern Iowa (929) and Wichita State (931) rounded out the top five. While Missouri State (935), Evansville (962) and Creighton (990) finished sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.
