EVANSVILLE, Ind. - After the #24/25 Southern Illinois University softball team (32-8, 13-5 MVC) took an early lead, a two-run Evansville (18-21, 5-13 MVC) home run in the bottom of the sixth inning sent things in a different direction as the Purple Aces came away with the 3-2 win.
The Salukis struck first in the top of the third inning as Krystal Stein and Tiffanie Dismore rattled off back-to-back base hits.
Samantha Carter got on base by a fielder's choice as Stein was tagged out on the play, but the play put Dismore in scoring position for senior Lauren Roney as hit a single down the left-field line, scoring Dismore and putting SIU up 1-0.
Evansville tied up the game in the bottom of the third inning as Purple Ace pitcher Jacki Bradley scored on an error by Katie Louis. Bradley got on base by way of a fielder's choice and advanced to third base on a double down the right-field line by leadoff batter Ashley Werner.
The third-inning run ends Scoggins' scoreless inning streak. The streak, that began a week before against Evansville, was up to 35.2 innings, nearing her career high of 36.1 innings.
SIU regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning as Louis led off with a single and advanced to second base on an error by Evansville's Lissa Fehlman.
After going to third on Lauren Haas' ground out, Louis was able to score and put the Salukis up 2-0 on a single by Amanda Clifton.
The lead did not last for long, though, as Cassey Kemna led off the bottom of the sixth with a single. She scored, along with Alicia Laraway, when Laraway hit a two-run home run to left field, putting Evansville up 3-2.
SIU rebounded and led off the seventh inning with back-to-back hits by Stein and Dismore. The duo advanced to second and third, respectively, after a sacrifice bunt by Carter, her ninth of the season.
But, the Purple Ace defense held out, shutting the Salukis out for the inning, taking away the 3-2 win.
Scoggins takes the loss for SIU after striking out six batters in the complete-game appearance.
Bradley takes the win for Evansville. She had three strikeouts, allowing eight SIU hits.
The Salukis return to action Saturday, April 22 with a doubleheader against Creighton, beginning at 12 p.m. The series is SIU's last home series of the season and a Senior Day ceremony is scheduled to follow the second game of the doubleheader.
The three-game MVC series will conclude with a single game Sunday at 12 p.m.
