Six Salukis named to MVC Scholar-Athlete Softball Team

ST. LOUIS - Even though the 2006 softball season is over the Southern Illinois University, the awards keep coming in.
The SIU softball team placed a Missouri Valley Conference-high six players on the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team. It is the most that SIU has placed on the scholar-athlete team since 2001.
Amanda Clifton, Lauren Haas, Cassidy Scoggins and Krystal Stein were all named to the first team while seniors Katie Louis and Lauren Roney were named honorable mention.
The six players honored have not been strangers to honors this season. Stein, Louis and Scoggins were named All-MVC first team while Haas and Roney were named to the second team.
Clifton and Roney were selected to the MVC All-Tournament Team. Scoggins was also named All-Great Lakes Region first team while Stein was named All-Great Lakes Region second team.
All six were selected to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V teams. Stein, Haas, Scoggins and Clifton were named to the first team while Roney and Louis were named to the second team.
Clifton, a junior accounting major from St. Louis, has a 3.94 cumulative GPA. Playing mostly as a catcher, she has a .315 batting average with four doubles and five home runs.
Haas, a sophomore marketing major from Bremerton, Wash., has a 3.78 cumulative GPA. A utility player, she has seen action at shortstop, third base and designated player in 2006. She has a .317 batting average, second on the team, with nine doubles, a triple and five home runs.
Scoggins, a junior dietetics major from Owasso, Okla., has a 3.23 cumulative GPA. She has seen a majority of SIU's action at pitcher in 2006, finishing the season with a 26-12 record and a 1.09 ERA. She had 11 shut outs along with 240 strikeouts in 225.1 innings pitched.
Stein, a sophomore public relations major from Nashville, Ill., has a 4.00 cumulative GPA. She finished the season with a .314 batting average, with five doubles, three triples and six stolen bases.
Louis, a senior marketing major from O'Fallon, Ill., has a 3.21 cumulative GPA. The senior split time in 2006 between third base and first base and led the team with a .329 batting average. She also had nine doubles, a triple and nine home runs for a .600 slugging percentage.
Roney, a senior psychology major from Belleville, Ill., has a 3.44 cumulative GPA. Another utility player, she saw action in 2006 at second base, left field, right field and designated player. She has a .310 batting average with four doubles, a triple and two home runs.
The SIU softball team qualified for its fourth-straight NCAA Tournament in 2006. The Salukis posted a 1-2 record in the regional, beating the University of California-Santa Barbara, but falling to host Northwestern and Notre Dame. SIU finished the season with a 35-13 overall record.
