Ukabam named to Academic All-America Team

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois thrower Amarachi Ukabam was voted to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women's Track and Field/Cross Country second team, after earning Academic All-District First Team honors. The senior carries a 3.80 grade point average in health education.
Ukabam was also named the Mideast Regional Women's Field Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Ukabam successfully defended her 2005 Regional title in May in the shot put, throwing 58-11.50 to break her own Mideast Regional record, along with the school and Missouri Valley Conference all-time best. The senior also threw a career-best in the discus to set a new SIU and MVC record, while taking the meet title with a toss of 187-07. In 2005, Ukabam finished second in the discus at regionals.
She went on to the NCAA Championships where she finished ninth in the discus and 13th in the shot. Her finish in the discus was enough to earn her All-American honors, the ninth accolade of her career. Since transferring to SIU in 2004 from Ohio State, Ukabam has claimed six All-American awards.
Ukabam has qualified and will compete at the 2006 AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. June 21-25 in the shot put and discus.
To be eligible, a student-athletes must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
The Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA (the College Sports Information Directors of America), a 2,000 member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
