Women's golf signs two for 2008-09

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois women's golf head coach Diane Daugherty received commitments from two high school athletes on National Signing Day.
Haley Sipe and Alisha Matthews will join the Salukis for the 2008-09 season.
Sipe joins SIU from nearby Marion High School where she lettered in golf or four years, earning MVP and All-South honors each year. Sipe finished in the top two in the conference all four years at Marion.
Sipe was a regular at regional and sectional meets, as well as the state meet. As a senior, Sipe posted her best finish at state with a tie for 13th.
Matthews will come to SIU from Mehlville High School in St. Louis where she has been an All-Conference and All-District performer for four years and All-State for three years.
Matthews was named to the St. Louis Dispatch All-Metro Team three times. She has won two conference championships at Mehlville as well as one district championship.
In 2005, Matthews turned in a fourth place finish at the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) tournament in Long Grove, Iowa. In 2006 she was the first-place qualifier at an AJGA tournament in Chicago.
Off the course, Matthews is a four-time member of the high honor roll and a member of the National Honor Society. Matthews is also a member of First Tee of Gateway and the AJGA Youth Leadership Club.
