One day after Saluki guard Jamaal Tatum was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player-of-the-Year, he picked up another prestigious honor as he was voted onto the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team.
Tatum was named to the second-team by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) and picked up the sixth-most votes in the nation.
Tatum is the first Academic All-American in men's basketball at SIU since Mike Glenn won the award in both 1976 and 1977. In addition to his on-court prowess, Tatum carries a 3.57 cumulative grade point average and is majoring in speech communications. He was one of 40 finalists on the All-America ballot after being named Academic All-District earlier this month.
The senior guard enters this week's MVC Tournament with 1,557 career points, which ranks No. 7 all-time in SIU history. Tatum has helped the No. 11-ranked Salukis to a 25-5 overall mark and 15-3 conference record as SIU earned the tournament's top seed for the fifth time in the past six years.
