ST. LOUIS - Following her performance at last weekend's Florida State Invitational, Southern Illinois University outfielder Katie Wilson was named Missouri Valley Conference Softball Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
Wilson is the first Saluki to earn MVC Player of the Week honors this season for SIU; Ashley Hamby was named Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 26. She is also the first freshman to earn the Valley's weekly honor this season.
Wilson, a native of Alton, Ill., hit .429 at the plate for SIU, going 6-for-14 to lead the Salukis to a 4-2 record last weekend at the Florida State Invitational.
She went for extra bases in four of her six hits - hitting a double and three home runs. Two of her home runs came in SIU's 8-1 win over Florida A&M, tying a SIU single-game record for home runs - a mark that she had already tied earlier in the season with two home run in SIU's 8-5 win over LSU.
Wilson also tallied eight RBI while posting a 1.143 slugging percentage in the six games. She also stole two bases over the weekend, putting her in the lead on the team with eight so far this season.
She also took over the lead in the home run category on the team. Her three over the weekend give her seven on the season.
Wilson was one of six Salukis to start all six games in the FSU Invitational, splitting time between right and center field, posting an error-free performance. Her first home run in the FAMU game also proved to be the game-winning run, her second game-winning run and third game-winning hit of the season. Her performance in the six games also earned her a spot on the 10-player Florida State Invitational All-Tournament team.
The No.18/20-ranked Salukis return to action on Tues., March 13 with a 2 p.m. contest at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
