Men's Golf finishes 13th at Samford Intercollegiate

TRUSSVILLE, Ala. - After finishing the first day of play in a tie for 11th, the Southern Illinois University men's golf team slipped two spots to finish 13th overall at the Samford Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
Hosted by the Samford University, the Samford Intercollegiate was a 54-hole tournament that took place at Limestone Springs Golf Course in Trussville, Ala. The par-72 course played at 7,100 yards.
The Salukis finished the first day of play with at 42-over-par 618 and in a tie with the University of Dayton for 11th place.
Southern Illinois came back in Tuesday's final round, posting a 35-over-par 323 to finish at 77-over 941. SIU places 13th out of the 17 teams in the tournament field.
Senior Andrew Gwinup led Southern in its effort, coming in a tie for 21st with an 8-over-par 224. Gwinup carded an even-par 72 in the first round and finished up with back-to-back rounds of 4-over 76 to finish the tournament.
Freshman Blake Driskell follows 12 strokes behind Gwinup in 54th place. Driskell carded rounds of 79-76-81--236 in the two-day tournament.
Coming in only one stroke behind Driskell is senior Daniel Tomlin with a 21-over-par 237. Tomlin finishes in a tie for 55th.
After finishing the first day in a tie with teammate Brandon Vagner, senior Braxton Weaver pulled ahead with finish in a tie for 68th with a 28-over 244.
Vagner rounds out Saluki scoring with a 33-over-par 249 to finish 77th overall out of the field of 84.
Austin Peay came back from being seven strokes out of the lead following the first day of action to take the team title with a 3-over-par 867.
Jose Toledo, of the University of New Orleans, won the individual title with rounds of 71-69-69--209 to finish 7-under-par.
The Salukis will now take a couple of weeks off and return to action on April 2 at the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic, hosted by Wichita State University at Wichita Country Club.
