CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The No. 20/21 Southern Illinois University softball team used six home runs and two complete-game pitching performances to sweep the University of Northern Iowa on Saturday.
The Salukis (33-9, 13-3 MVC) ran up a total of 33 base hits, 19 in the first game and 14 in the second, to down the Panthers 14-1 and 10-2 in two five-inning games.
Senior pitcher Cassidy Scoggins pitched the first game, holding UNI to three hits and one run in five innings and striking out seven. Senior Ashley Hamby was impressive in game two, allowing only three hits and two runs with seven strikeouts in five innings.
In game one, the Saluki offense came alive early, scoring four runs in the top of the first on six hits, including a Tiffanie Dismore triple and a Jayme Wamsley homer.
Including Wamsley, four Salukis went yard in game one for a total of five homers, which ties the SIU record for home runs in a game.
Becky Wegmann homered to left field in the fourth inning, Allie Hanson hit one out in the fifth and Katie Wilson had homers in the third and the fourth. Wilson's two home runs bring her season total to 12, tying her for third in the single-season record books.
The Salukis went scoreless in the second, but struck for three more runs in the third. Wilson led off with her first homer of the game. Katie Wagner hit a triple and scored on a throwing error. Dismore reached on an error and stole second on a wild pitch before scoring on a Wegmann double.
SIU tacked on five more in the fourth inning. Amanda Clifton singled and scored when Wilson hit her second homer of the game. Wagner and Krystal Stein both reached on singles and scored when Wegmann hit a home run to left field.
The Salukis added two more runs in the top of the fifth when Lauren Haas walked and scored on an Allie Hanson homer.
Jen Larsen took the loss for UNI, falling to 9-13 on the season. She struck out one in two innings of work, giving up a walk and ten hits for six runs. Scoggins record improved to 18-6 on the season with the win.
SIU wasted no time in the second game, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Wamsley scored on a Clifton single to shortstop.
The Salukis extended their lead to 4-0 in the second. Wagner led off with a single advanced to second on a Katie Schmidt sacrifice bunt. Wagner scored off a Dismore double. Dismore then moved to third on a Wegmann fly out and scored on a throwing error by the right fielder. Alicia Garza doubled and advanced to third on a Hass single. Garza scored on a Wamsley single.
SIU added two more runs in the third when Wegmann singled in Dismore and Wilson. The Salukis added two more in the fourth. Haas led off with a double and scored on a Wamsley single. Wamsley scored from third on a Wilson sacrifice fly to left field. Schmidt singled Wamsley home.
The Salukis scored their final two runs of the day in the top of the fifth on a Wamsley home run. The homer was Wamsley's second of the day and moves her into a tie for sixth on the SIU single-season record list with ten on the year.
Liz Adams took the loss for UNI in her first start of the season, giving up seven hits in 1.2 innings with two walks and four runs. Hamby improved her record to 15-3 with the win.
SIU and UNI will complete their three-game series tomorrow at 12 p.m. at Panther Park.
