CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois softball player Krystal Stein has been selected to participate in the 2007 NCAA Leadership Conference held in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. in May.
Stein, a junior outfielder for the Salukis, was one of 356 student-athletes selected from a pool of 1,308 nominations.
"I am very honored to have the opportunity to represent SIU athletics," said Stein. "I hope to gain insight at the conference that I can give back to SIU for everything the athletic department has done for me."
The annual leadership conference was created by the NCAA in 1996 to provide a diverse group of the nation's top student-athletes an opportunity to actively participate in activities that will enable them to become better leaders on their campuses and in their communities.
"We are honored to have Krystal represent Southern Illinois," Assistant Athletic Director Kristina Therriault said. "She is a great ambassador for our student athletes and will do an excellent job."
Each school nominated four student-athletes who have demonstrated an ability or strong desire to be leaders and would benefit from a significant leadership experience. In order to be eligible, applicants must be in good academic standing and must have athletics eligibility remaining in the following academic year.
SIU also nominated swimmer Raymond Sophie, men's basketball's Christian Cornelius and women's basketball's Erica Smith.
Saluki quarterback Nick Hill represented the SIU athletic department in 2006.
The 2007 conference will be held at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort from May 27-31.
