ST. LOUIS - After her dominating offensive performance over the past week, sophomore catcher Jayme Wamsley was named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
She is the second Saluki to earn the honor this season as freshman Katie Wilson was named Valley Player of the Week back on March 12.
Wamsley went 9-for-15 at the plate in SIU's five games last week for an amazing .600 average.
In total for the week, Southern Illinois scored 47 runs and Wamsley had a big part in that as she tallied 10 RBI while scoring five runs of her own. Part of the offensive burst came on the back of her three home runs hit in the five games.
The three home runs now give her 10 on the season, enough to rank in a tie for seventh all-time at SIU in single-season home runs.
With her home runs against UNI, Wamsley also continues her streak of hitting a home run against every MVC opponent that SIU has played more than one game against. She has previously hit home runs against Bradley, Evansville, Indiana State, Creighton and Missouri State.
Not only was it big hitting doing it for Wamsley, but timely hitting as she was responsible for the game-winning hit or at bat in four of SIU's five wins this week.
With her offensive run during the week, Wamsley now finds herself in a nine-game hitting streak.
The No. 20/21 SIU softball team takes a break this week with no mid-week games, but returns to action on Saturday, April 28 with a conference doubleheader at Illinois State beginning at 12 p.m.
