CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University softball team's doubleheader with Southeast Missouri State on Tuesday was cancelled because of storms passing through the Cape Girardeau, Mo. area.
The Salukis and Redhawks were in the top of the fifth inning, with SIU leading 5-2, when lightning caused play to be suspended.
Because of the severity of the storms and the duration, the decision was made to call the game and cancel the second game. The games will not be made up.
The Salukis had a 5-2 lead with two outs on SEMO in the top of the fifth, one out away from the game becoming official. The Redhawks were threatening, though, as Southeast Missouri had the bases loaded.
The No. 18/22 Southern Illinois softball (28-8, 9-2 MVC) team will return to action at 4 p.m., Friday with the first game of a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series with Drake (12-25, 2-7 MVC) at Charlotte West Stadium. The series will continue on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
