The Southern Illinois University women's golf team received its first ever NCAA Regional team bid today. The Salukis will compete in the Central Regional hosted by the University of Michigan.
SIU will play a practice round at the University of Michigan's golf course before regional play begins on Thursday, May 10.
"I'm thrilled we're going to Michigan," said head coach Diane Daugherty. "It'll be a golf course that we're most used to playing as far as being in the Midwest with the hills and the big trees. We're thrilled about the style of golf course."
The Central Regional will be played over three days and consists of 54 holes. Play will begin each day at 8 a.m. Each regional is made up of 21 teams and three individual competitors.
"I'm thrilled with the teams there," said Daugherty. "Georgia is the No. 1 seed there and Arizona is there, but a lot of the other teams are Midwest teams. I think that's going to help our comfort level as far as not being intimidated since it's our first trip to the NCAAs."
The top eight teams and the top two individuals from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championship on May 22-25 at the LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.
