URBANA, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team ended their regular season earlier than expected when the 2007 Illini Spring Classic was cancelled due to weather.
The tournament, which was scheduled to be played at the Stone Creek Golf Club, was called off due to wind chills in the mid-teens.
The tournament was originally scheduled for 36 holes on Friday and 18 holes on Saturday, but was then shortened to 18 holes each day in hopes of getting both rounds in.
Shortly after starting the first round at 11 a.m. Friday morning the players were called into the clubhouse because of the bitter-cold conditions. Coaches then made the decision to cancel the tournament.
This is the first time the tournament has been cancelled in the 31-year history of the event. This is also the first time that SIU head coach Diane Daugherty has had a tournament cancelled in her 21 years as the Salukis' coach.
SIU will return to action when they travel to Bradley for the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship April 15-17 at WeaverRidge Golf Club.
