CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University softball team won both of their games in come-from-behind fashion to go 2-0 in the first day of the 2007 Saluki Invitational at Charlotte West Stadium on Saturday.
SIU kicked-off the tournament with a 5-2 victory versus John A. Logan College before defeating Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis 3-2 in extra innings.
The Salukis trailed JALC 2-0 in the top of the third inning of their first game, but scored five unanswered runs to top the Volunteers, 5-2. Senior shortstop Becky Wegmann went 2-for-3 at the plate and freshman pitcher Danielle Glosson earned the win, giving up two runs on six hits with six strikeouts in seven innings.
In their afternoon contest versus IUPUI, SIU trailed 1-0, but tied the score in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. After IUPUI scored in the top of the eighth inning to take a 2-1 lead, Wegmann delivered a bases-loaded walk-off two-RBI double to give the Salukis a 3-2 victory. Freshman pitcher Nikki Waters recorded 10 strikeouts and only allowed four hits to earn the win, and junior catcher Jayme Wamsley went 3-for-3 to lead the offense.
SIU will play two more games on Sunday, Sept. 16, taking on Evansville at 1 p.m. and SIU-Edwardsville at 5 p.m. to conclude the Saluki Invitational.
