CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's golf team will travel to South Carolina to participate in the Myrtle Beach Classic on Monday and Tuesday.
The Salukis will participate in the two-day, 36-hole tournament hosted by Coastal Carolina University at the par 72, 6,137-yard Great Dunes Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
"We've been to Myrtle Beach before to play, but we've never played this golf course," said SIU head coach Diane Daugherty. "Grand Dunes is supposed to be a fabulous golf course, so everybody's excited about that."
SIU is coming off of a shaky performance at the North Texas Classic, where the Salukis got off to a bad start on day one and had to battle from behind to finish in third. According to Daugherty, it is key for the Salukis to play well from the beginning of the tournament.
"It's 18-18, which is not as grueling as a 36-18," said Daugherty. "We can't get off to a bad start like we did last time. We just dug ourselves too big a hole and we shot a great round the second day and only lost by four. We've got to come out on a good start because we're playing against a bunch of good schools."
The tournament's 15-team field includes host team Coastal Carolina, East Tennessee State, Georgia State, Western Carolina, College of Charleston, Miami, East Carolina, Charleston Southern, Methodist College, Old Dominion, Elon, Campbell, UNC-Wilmington, UNC-Greensboro and SIU.
SIU will be represented in the tournament by Kelly Gerlach, Braidy Hood, Kate Laegeler, Lauren May and Christine Zoerlein.
The tournament will begin on Monday, Sept. 24 with the first round of play and conclude on Tuesday, Sept. 25 with the final 18 holes. Both days are scheduled for 7:30 a.m. starts.
