Men's golf finishes sixth at Cleveland State Invitational

CHARDON, Ohio - The Southern Illinois University men's golf team shot a final round 305 on Tuesday to finish in sixth place at the 11-team Cleveland State Invitational held at the Sand Ridge Golf Club in Chardon, Ohio.
SIU stood in fifth place after the first two rounds but finished two strokes behind the University of Dayton who moved ahead of the Salukis from seventh place to take fifth with a final round score of 296.
"We had a tough outcome to the tournament and I know we can play better golf that what we finished," said head coach Leroy Newton. "The course was more difficult than what we had faced, but it wasn't anything we couldn't handle. We just have to get back to finishing rounds, keeping the ball in the fairway and do a better job at Texas next week."
Geoff Mead of South Dakota State shot a final-round 1-under 70 to take first place individually and the University of Cincinnati posted a 292 to take the team title, edging Loyola University of Chicago by four strokes, who carded a total of 889 for the three rounds.
The Salukis were led by sophomore Blake Driskell, who carded a 4-over-par 75 in the final round to finish tied for 13th with a 225. The finish is his second top-20 finish of the season and his fourth of his career.
Senior Matt Ellis finished tied for 16th with a final round 83 and a three-round total of 227 and junior Todd Obergoenner had his best round of the tournament with a 3-over-par 74 to move into a tie for 23rd.
John Danielson also moved up the leaderboard in the final day, posting his best round of the tournament at 3-over 74 to finish tied for 45th, and Phillip Collier shot an 82 to finish tied for 49th.
The Salukis return to action Monday, Oct. 1 at the UTA/Water Chase Invitational played at the Water Chase Golf Course in Arlington, Texas.
