CARTERVILLE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team won the 2008 Saluki Invitational after firing an SIU record low round of 285 today at Crab Orchard Golf Club in Carterville, Ill.
The Salukis' 285 today broke the SIU record for all-time low 18-hole score of 290 set last season at the MVC Championship as well as the SIU best second round score of 297 set at the 2007 Rio Verde Invitational.
Combined with their 299 from round one, the Salukis tallied a tournament total of 584, which broke the SIU all-time low 36-hole score of 590 set at the 2004 Texas-Pan American.
This was the first Saluki Invitational win for SIU since their 2005 victory at the tournament.
"I'm extremely happy and extremely proud of my team," said head coach Diane Daugherty. "To go from Hickory and our home course advantage to a new golf course and playing like we did yesterday and today, to shoot that 285 and set all the records was great."
Braidy Hood earned medalist honors with her two-round total of 139 (72-67). Hood's 67 broke the SIU all-time low 18-hole score of 68, which she set last season at the MVC meet. Hood's scores also broke the Saluki Invitational records for second round individual score, previously 72, and 36-hole score, previously 145.
Kelly Gerlach finished second overall with a 142 (74-68) over two days. Gerlach's day-two score also broke the previously standing Saluki Invitational second round and 36-hole records.
Christine Zoerlein (t16th, 78-74--152) and Lauren May (t18th, 75-78--153) rounded out SIU's team scoring in the play-six, count-four tournament.
"We had all six players in the 70s and we do get to count four out of six in the Missouri Valley, so I think our depth has to account for something," said Daugherty.
Also competing for SIU were Danielle Kaufman (t24th, 79-76--155) and Kate Laegeler (t36th, 81-77--158).
SIU also had three individual competitors, Nikki Miller (t62nd, 87-80--167), Alex Anderson (t66th, 82-87--169) and Lindsey Phillips (t76th, 90-99--189).
The Salukis will be back in action on Friday, April 4 and Saturday, April 5 when they travel to Champaign, Ill. for the Illini Invitational.
