WICHITA, Kan. - Seven Shockers had multiple-hits and lefthander Rob Musgrave tossed a seven-hit shutout to lead top-seeded Wichita State University (42-15) to a 12-0 victory over fifth-seeded Southern Illinois (33-22) earlier tonight in the quarterfinals of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
The game was limited to seven innings due to the league's run rule.
"The game got way too fast for us," said Saluki head coach Dan Callahan. "It was embarrassing. They were far more superior than us tonight."
Musgrave shutout the Salukis in a run-rule game for the second time this season. WSU won by a score of 10-0 in seven innings in his previous start against SIU on April 18.
Two teams were eliminated from this year's tournament before the Shockers even took the field for their postseason debut tonight. And, needless to say, they were ready to go.
SIU starting lefthander Shawn Joy gave up five hits in a complete game shutout the last time he took the mound at Eck Stadium, but the Shockers made light work of him tonight.
It took a relentless WSU offense only three innings to get a 10-0 lead against Joy.
The Shockers sent a total of 22 men to the plate in that span, scoring four times in the first and three in each of the second and third.
Andy Dirks led off the game with a double to left center and later scored on a passed ball. Conor Gillaspie walked and Clinton McKeever was hit by a pitch. Two hitters later, Josh Workman knocked in Gillaspie on a two-out single. Tyler Weber followed with a two-RBI double, and just like that, WSU pulled ahead, 4-0.
WSU continued to rough up Joy when it saw each of its first three hitters hit safely and score in the second.
The Shockers then tacked on three more runs, including two on a two-out double by Gillaspie, to extend their lead to 10-0 in the third.
WSU delivered the knock-out punch with another two runs in the sixth.
Musgrave, who improved to 10-1 on the year, also struck out five and walked none in his seven-inning gem.
Joy (6-2) gave up a career-high 13 hits and 10 runs in just five innings of work. He also struck out one and walked three.
"Their barrels found a lot more balls this time," said Joy when asked what was different from the last time he started against WSU. "I felt the same and prepared the same. I just didn't give us a chance."
WSU finished with 15 hits on the night. Dirks, Ryan Jones, Gillaspie, Dusty Coleman, Workman, Tyler Hill and Kevin Hall had two apiece.
SIU drops to the loser's bracket, where it will face third-seeded Creighton in an elimination game at 11 a.m., CST, Friday. Righthander Adam Curynski (4-1) will start on the mound.
