CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University head baseball coach Dan Callahan said he will miss next week's season-opening series at the Caravelle Resort Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C., so that he can undergo a medical procedure.
Entering his 15th year as head coach at SIU, Callahan has never missed a game, but said he expects a strong performance from his team under the direction of Ken Henderson, who will lead the team in Callahan's absence. Henderson is in his 19th year as Associate Head Coach.
"I have all the confidence in our coaching staff, and I feel our squad will respond positively in my absence," Callahan said.
Callahan, who has been with the team throughout the preseason, hopes to resume coaching duties when the Salukis travel to the Stetson University Bright House Invitational on Feb. 27-Mar. 1.
"We look forward to a successful and speedy recovery for Coach Callahan," said SIU Director of Athletics Mario Moccia. "We're excited to begin the 2009 campaign and are in capable hands with our assistant coaches for this season-opening tournament."
The Salukis, who were picked to finish fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference this season, open their 2009 campaign against James Madison (Feb. 20), before facing tournament host Coastal Carolina (Feb. 20) and Troy (Feb. 21, Feb. 22).
