CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's basketball team will come together with Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH) for the Third Annual "Pink Out" Saturday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. against Indiana State for breast cancer awareness.
All tickets for the "Pink Out" are $2 with $1 going to the SIH Women with Hope support group. "Pink Out" shirts will be given out courtesy of SIH to the first 1,000 fans to arrive. All breast cancer survivors will receive free admission, a shirt and the opportunity to be recognized at half time. The Salukis will wear pink uniforms provided by Russell.
February 7, Saluki Athletics handed out 800 Pink Out Piggy Banks, sponsored by SIH. Anyone who brings back a piggy bank with donations will get free admission into the game Feb. 21 and get their name put in a drawing for prizes. All donations from the piggy banks will be collected via a Wish You Well stationed in the front lobby and will go directly to the SIH Women with Hope - a breast cancer support group.
Doors will open at noon for Pink Zone activities including inflatables, games, face painting and hair coloring on the upper concourse of the arena.
In 2008, the donations from the Piggy Banks in addition to ticket sales and other proceeds helped the "Pink Out" raise more than $10,000 for breast cancer.
Women with Hope is a program provided by SIH Cancer Care Services and has grown immensely in passed nine years - from a support group to a program that provides local women with breast cancer the support they need prior, during and after treatment. This includes monthly support group meetings at the Breast Center and an opportunity to become local advocates via education conferences. SIH Cancer Care services' mission is to provide superior and comprehensive treatment for cancer patients regardless of their ability to pay. Fund-raiser's such as the "Pink Out" helps the organization to meet this goal.
