CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Southern Illinois University women's golf team finished 38th at the Kiawah Island Classic.
The tournament, hosted by College of Charleston, marks the largest collegiate golf event in history. Of the 43 participating teams, 20 are ranked in the top-100 by Golfweek. SIU jumped two spots from yesterday, finishing ahead of Bucknell, Bradley, Mercer, Marshall, and Citadel.
As a team, the Salukis shot 990 (341-326-325) over three rounds on two different courses. Freshman Alisha Matthews led the team throughout the tournament, shooting a 242 (81-79-82), while Meg Gilley shot a 245 (83-78-84). The seniors stepped up on the final day of competition with Kate Laegeler shooting a 251 (88-84-79). Braidy Hood finished one stroke behind Laegeler recording a 252 (89-85-78), both girls posting their lowest score of the week. Alex Anderson rounded out the Saluki lineup shooting a 286 (104-90-92).
Head coach Diane Daugherty was pleased with the team's performance, and was happy to finish ahead of conference rival, Bradley.
"We played a lot better today," Daugherty said. "I was just glad to see improvement everyday."
The Salukis will be back in action, March 6-8 at the Rio Verde Invitational in Rio Verde, Ariz.
