DELAND, Fla. Stetson University (2-5) erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to seal a 10-5 come-from-behind win over Southern Illinois (1-6) earlier tonight at the Bright House Invitational.
The Salukis, now on a six-game losing streak, blew a lead in the eighth or ninth inning for the second-straight game.
SIU led, 4-2, before Stetson sent 12 men to the plate and scored eight runs on seven hits and an error against a struggling Saluki bullpen.
"We made mistakes at crucial times that hurt us in the end," said Saluki associate head coach Ken Henderson. "We again had opportunities, but didn't capitalize or make the pitches we needed to when it counted most."
Righthander Andrew Dunn, after retiring six in a row over two scoreless innings, gave up two runs on three-straight doubles. Preseason Atlantic Sun Player of the Year Jeremy Cruz doubled off the center field wall and scored on Aaron Crittenden's smash to the gap in right center. Crittenden scored the tying run on Nick Rickles' double to left, knocking Dunn out of the game.
Kellen Candau was immediately greeted with a single by Frank Florio. A fielder's choice and an error came after that, leading to two more runs. Cruz's sacrifice fly and RBI-singles by Crittenden and Casey Frawley extended the Hatters lead to 10-4.
SIU started strong behind Michael Stalter's outburst at the plate. A native of Hopedale, Ill., Stalter hit two-run homers in consecutive at-bats to get the Dawgs a 4-0 lead. He became the first Saluki to hit two home runs in a game since P.J. Finigan did it against Tennessee-Martin on April 19, 2005.
Stalter mashed each of his home runs deep over the left field wall on 0-1 counts. He hit his first bomb with one out in the top of the first. He came up again with a runner on and one out in the third, and launched his second homer near the berm of a high school football stadium which resides outside the Conrad Park grounds.
After that, SIU would not score again until the ninth.
Dunn fell to 0-2 on the year after giving up three runs on three hits in two innings of relief. The loss marked the third-straight by the Saluki pen.
Nick Bohne (1-0) was credited with the win. Bohne allowed one hit and struck out two in 1.2 scoreless innings.
Righthander Nathan Forer gave SIU a quality start, allowing only two runs on seven hits in five innings. Forer also struck out four and walked one.
Forer exited the game in the sixth. From then on, four Saluki relievers took the mound, giving up a combined eight runs on seven hits in three innings.
Offensively, SIU had nine hits, with Stalter going 2-for-3 with two runs, four RBI and two walks to pave the way. Wade Dutton and Jordan Sivertsen also added two hits.
Frawley and Crittenden led the Hatters with three hits each.
SIU faces Iowa at 10:45 a.m., ET, Sunday. Lefthander Jimmy Cornell (0-1) will start on the mound.
