Dawg Bites
The Southern Illinois Basketball team is in its 49th year of existence... Head Coach Dana Eikenberg is in her fifth season with the team and holds a 50-86 (.368) record... last season the Salukis finished with a 10-20 record and were 5-13 in MVC play, ninth in the Missouri Valley Conference... Southern returns four letterwinners and two starters from the 2007-08 squad and welcomes five transfers and three freshmen.
Scouting UNI
The Northern Iowa Panthers return four starters from a team that went 13-18 overall and 9-5 in the Missouri Valley, tied for sixth-place in the league a year ago. This season the team is 6-12 overall and 4-5 in MVC play good for sixth in the league. UNI is led by second-year head coach Tanya Warren. The Panthers have dropped four straight in league play. UNI has been without the help of 2008 MVC Freshman of the Year Jacqui Kalin the last 14 games, led by Kim Wypiszynski with 11.4 points and 5.5 rebounds. Nicole Clausen chips in 11.2 points and 3.1 boards.
SIU/UNI Series History
Southern Illinois will meet UNI for the 51st time in program history. SIU leads the series, 29-22. UNI has taken 20 of the last 23 meetings, sweeping both meetings last season with a 74-69 victory at home and a 64-52 victory at SIU Arena last season. In the first meeting this season, UNI defeated SIU, 54-41, in Cedar Falls.
Smith Academic All-District
Senior guard Erica Smith was one of 11 student-athletes named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V Women's Basketball Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Smith, who carries a 3.73 GPA in business management and marketing, garnered second-team honors. The senior has been named to the Missouri Valley Conference scholar-athlete team in 2007 and 2008.
Gibson on Pace for 1,000
Saluki senior Jasmine Gibson is 22 points away from 1,000 points, 20th all-time at SIU. With 978 points, she is the 21st Saluki in program history to reach 900 points. She should hit the mark and wrap up her career top-20 all-time.
Eikenberg Hits Half-Century Mark
Saluki head coach Dana Eikenberg picked up her 50th win at SIU with a victory over Missouri State Saturday. Eikenberg, in her fifth season with SIU and ninth season as a Division I head coach, is 50-86 at SIU and 88-160 overall. In four seasons at the University of Missouri-Kansas City she was 38-74, helping to rebuild the Kangaroos program.
Smith in Century Club, Gibson Approaching
In her fourth season as a Saluki, Erica Smith has seen action in 109 games in her career. The 32nd Saluki to play in 100 career games, she is just three-games shy of the top-10 list at SIU. If Smith sees action in the final eight regular-season games she will be fifth all-time at SIU. Smith's teammate Jasmine Gibson is just two games shy of the century mark. She will be the 33rd Saluki to play in 100 games.
Salukis Snap Skid
The Salukis held Wichita State to one point in overtime to snap an eight-game losing streak and pick up their first Missouri Valley Conference win of the season Thursday, Jan. 29.
Starters Spur Offense
After 19 games this season, the Salukis have two players averaging double-digits, both starters. SIU's starters have contributed to 76 percent (870 of 1143 points) of the Salukis' offense this season.
Saluki Starters
In 19 games this season the Salukis have used nine different lineups. The only player to start the first 15 games is senior forward Jasmine Gibson. Senior Erica Smith was absent in one starting lineup, while Katrina Swingler has started all but three contests.
Salukis on the Boards
SIU was out-rebounded by 10-plus in seven games this season, most recently 42-to27 against Bradley at home. Jan. 24, the Salukis were out-rebounded 43-to-27 at Illinois State. The Salukis were out-boarded 41-to-30 against Drake Saturday, Jan. 17, 47-to-30 at Bradley Friday, Jan. 9 and 34-to-23 at UNI Sunday, Jan. 11. The Salukis have been out-rebounded by over 10 twice in non-conference action against No. 12/16 Florida (42-to-32) and No. 25/25 DePaul (53-to-30).
Conference Start
SIU dropped its first seven Missouri Valley Conference games (0-7) for the first time in four years, since 2004-05.
Under 50
The Salukis have been held under 50 points six times this season against DePaul (42), three straight contests at Bradley (49), UNI (41) and at home against Creighton (43). The Salukis were held under 40 points for the first time since 2004 at Indiana State (37). Most recently the SIU was held to 48 points against Bradley. When Southern is held under 50 points they have shot just 33 percent (100-of-303) from the field.
SIU in Conference Openers
Southern Illinois is 14-12 in conference openers since the 1983-84 season. The Salukis have won three of the last four conference openers, 3-2 under fifth-year head coach Dana Eikenberg.
SIU in Non-Conference Play
Dana Eikenberg has guided the Salukis to a 20-34 record in non-conference play. When playing in SIU Arena, Eikenberg's teams are 12-9.
In February
SIU is 167-117 all-time in the month of February since 1974-75, including a 9-20 mark under Dana Eikenberg.
