CARBONDALE, Ill. - Two student-athletes have been recognized by the Southern Illinois University Alumni Association and Student Alumni Council as two of the Most Distinguished Seniors at SIU. Bryan Mullins (men's basketball) and Amy Phegley (cross country) were among the 25 presented with the honor for their contributions to SIU and the surrounding community.
Despite missing the last eight games with a stress fracture in his right foot, G Bryan Mullins (6-1, 185, Sr.) was named the MVC's Defensive Player of the Year for the second-straight season. Mullins became just the second player in MVC history to accumulate 500 assists and 250 steals in a career, joining Creighton's Ryan Sears (1997-01). Mullins finished with 509 assists and 254 steals and ranks 11th and 5th in league history in those categories, respectively.
Phegley competed in all five meets for the Salukis this season, recording her top time at the SIU Early Bird with a time of 16:53.25. Other top-finishes this season include 20:39.60 at the EIU Panther Invite, 20:11.72 at the Saluki Invitational, 19:53.16 at the Louisville Classic, and 19:18.12 at the Evansville Invite.
The 25 Most Distinguished Senior Award is presented annually to 25 standout SIU students who have enriched the university through their involvement in campus and community activities. In order to qualify for the honor, students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, be a graduating senior who has contributed to the University and surrounding community, as well as answer two essay questions and provide letters of recommendation.
