PANORA, Iowa. - The Southern Illinois University women's golf team finished ninth at the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship, hosted by Drake at the par-72, 6,081-yard Lake Panorama National Resort in Panora, Iowa.. After spending the first two days in tenth place, the Salukis shot a team total of 328 on the third day, moving up to ninth place with 694.
Illinois State remained in first throughout the tournament, capturing its league-record 10th conference title and will represent the MVC in the NCAA Regionals in early May. Drake, meanwhile, had its highest-ever finish, earning the second place spot. Drake was followed in the team standings by Wichita State, which fired a three-round 935 for a third place finish. UNI (941) finished fourth, followed by Missouri State (942), Indiana State (945), Creighton (946), Bradley (952), Southern Illinois (964), and Evansville (977).
The seniors led the Salukis after three rounds of play. Braidy Hood shot a 76 for the low round of the day, to tie for 16th place overall. Hood led the team overall with a 236 (81-79-76). Kate Laegeler shot a 242 (75-81-86) to finish just behind Hood. Freshman Alisha Matthews and Meg Gilley both shot a 246, while Alex Anderson shot a 249 for the Salukis.
Head coach Diane Daugherty said strong winds accounted for lower team scores across the board on the final day of competition.
"We moved up a spot and Braidy's low-round of the day was very exciting," said Daugherty. "But the tournament was just tough, to sum it up in one word."
