CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois softball (28-10, 10-5) returns home after a six-game road trip to face Evansville (11-28, 2-14) this afternoon at 4 p.m. at Charlotte West Stadium.
The single-game will conclude the three-game season series with the Purple Aces, after SIU swept a doubleheader at Evansville back on March 24. Southern Illinois won 3-0 in eight innings, and senior catcher Jayme Wamsley hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to give the Salukis a 5-4 nightcap win.
The team got off to a great start in the busy final week and a half stretch of the regular season with two wins at Saint Louis on Wednesday. The doubleheader sweep of the Billikens evened the record on the season-long six-game road trip at 3-3.
Southern leads the all-time series with the Purple Aces 51-17, and has won three straight games dating back to last year. The Salukis split last season's doubleheader at home against UE.
Following today's game, SIU will host Bradley for their final three-game weekend series of the season. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday a noon, and after the second game there will be a Senior Day ceremony to honor all of the graduating Salukis.
The series concludes on Sunday with a game at 12 p.m., and following the contest there will be a Diamond Dig in which all the ladies in the crowd will have the opportunity to search the field for a diamond buried beneath the dirt. The lucky lady who finds the diamond will be rewarded with a pair of diamond earrings courtesy of Diamond Designs in Marion.
Gift certificates and prizes will also be drawn randomly throughout the game.
Today's game against Evansville, as well as this weekend's series with Bradley, can be listen to or viewed live on Saluki All-Access.
