Nick Evans' Saluki clipper lasted slightly more than one minute before splitting in two and sinking to the bottom of the campus lake Saturday in the University's annual Great Cardboard Boat Regatta.
The wildly popular and 30-something year-old competition featured more than 30 homemade vessels. Evans competed in a heat with three other ships. His was not the first to sink.
"I didn't think I'd last 15 seconds," said the Salukis' freshman center, who advanced a good 50 feet from shore before the hull buckled. "The water was cold. Next year, it's Carlton Fay's turn."
