CARBONDALE, Ill. - The National Fastpich Coaches Association announced Southern Illinois second baseman Alicia Garza as a member of the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Mideast Region first team on Thursday.
Garza, a junior from Lafyatte, Ind., had an all-around season at the plate and in the field to lead the Salukis to a second place finish in the Missouri Valley Conference regular season and earn her second-career all-region selection.
Garza led the team with a .375 batting average, which ranked tied for ninth all-time in the program's history and tallied a team-best 35 RBI. In addition to her stellar hitting, she set a single-season personal-best .973 fielding percentage while starting every game at second base.
She also had nine doubles, four home runs and was a perfect 10-for-10 in stolen bases, which was a season-high.
Following her outstanding season she was selected All-MVC Second Team, named to the State Farm MVC All-Tournament team and moved up in the record book at SIU in a number of career statistical categories. Garza is fifth all-time for career batting average (.335), tied for sixth for career doubles (31) and 10th all-time for career RBI (96).
The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and Garza will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams that will be announced on Wednesday, May 27.
