CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois softball player Allie Hanson has been selected to participate in the 2009 NCAA Leadership Conference held in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. next week.
Hanson, a junior utility player on the Saluki softball team, was one of 700 student-athletes selected from a pool of nominations.
"I'm both exited and honored to receive this opportunity," Hanson said. "I think this will be a valuable experience and a great chance to learn more about other student athletes across the country."
The annual leadership conference was created by the NCAA in 1996 to provide a diverse group of the nation's top student-athletes an opportunity to actively participate in activities that will enable them to become better leaders on their campuses and in their communities.
"We are honored to have Allie represent Southern Illinois," Assistant Athletic Director Kristina Therriault said. "She is a great ambassador for our student athletes and will do an excellent job."
Each school nominated four student-athletes who have demonstrated an ability or strong desire to be leaders and would benefit from a significant leadership experience. In order to be eligible, applicants must be in good academic standing and must have athletics eligibility remaining in the following academic year. Other SIU athletes nominated included Connor James (football), Gwen Berry (track) and Willie Knox (track).
Former Saluki quarterbacks Joel Sambursky (2003) and Nick Hill (2006) represented the SIU athletic department, along with former softball player Krystal Stein in 2007 and current cross country and track and field athlete Mark Bowman in 2008.
The 2009 conference will be held at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort from May 24-27.
