CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University softball head coach Kerri Blaylock announced Monday that Jen Sewell has been named an assistant coach for the program. Sewell served last season as a volunteer assistant coach for the Salukis.
"We're very fortunate to have Jen join us in a full-time capacity," Blaylock said. "She has a wealth of knowledge and connections and a very good softball mind."
Blaylock said Sewell will mentor the team's catchers and infielders, as well as assist with scouting duties and recruiting.
"I'm thrilled to be full-time and join a staff with great coaches like Kerri, Christy (Connoyer) and Skip (Cosgrove)," Sewell said. "Any time you have an opportunity to join a program with this much tradition, you have to take it. I plan to help continue what this program is all about -- and that's producing good student-athletes."
Prior to SIU, Sewell served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Kansas (2004-08) and Princeton University (2001-04).
During her five-year tenure at KU, the Jayhawks won their first-ever Big 12 postseason championship and made two NCAA Regional appearances.
Sewell served as the interim head coach at Princeton from November 2003 to January 2004. Princeton made NCAA Tournament appearances in 2002 and 2003and won back-to-back Ivy League championships. In 2002, she was named to the Speedline/National Fastpitch Coaching Staff of the Year, after helping the Tigers achieve the most wins in program history.
The Tulsa, Okla.-native was a four-year letterwinner in softball as an infielder and catcher at Ohio University from 1996-2000, and is currently working on her master's degree in sport management at SIU.
