ST. MICHAEL'S, Md. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team finished third at the Towson Classic in their first tournament of the season.
The Salukis shot a 626 (313-313) finishing behind second-place Longwood. SIU finished ahead of Longwood after yesterday's round, but the Lancers shot a 299 today for a team total 614 (315-313) to pull ahead in the standings. Yale won the tournament with 590 (298-292).
"I am disappointed we didn't hang on to second place," head coach Diane Daugherty said. "But hats off to Longwood and Yale for playing that well."
Sophomore Alisha Matthews led the Salukis with a 151 (77-74). Her second round score of 74 marked the team-low, putting her at a sixth-place finish overall. Shaina Rennegarbe made an impressive college debut tying for ninth place with a 155 (77-78). Fellow freshman, Jenna Dombroski, also fired two rounds in the 70's finishing two strokes behind Rennegarbe with a 157 (78-79). Her finish put her tied for llth place out of 56 golfers. Meg Gilley shot a 163 (81-82) while Alex Anderson finished close behind with a 165 (82-83) to round out the lineup.
"We've got a lot of confidence and a 626 (313-313) is a good place to start," Daugherty said. "We left some shots on the golf course, but we're not going to back down."
The Salukis will be back in action next week as they travel to Springfield, Mo. for the Payne Stewart Memorial.
"There will be quite a few conference teams at the Payne Stewart," Daugherty said. "It will be a good chance for us to see where we stack up."
