PINEVILLE, Ky. - Southern Illinois came up three strokes short of the best third-round score Tuesday, as the Salukis rounded out the final day of the Wasiota Winds Fall Kick-off.
SIU posted a 287 on the last 18 holes, finishing just behind Eastern Illinois' 284 in the final round of competition. The Salukis' combined 54-hole score of 879 landed them a joint fifth-place finish with tournament host Morehead State.
Five out of the six golfers competing for the maroon and white fired third rounds in the 70's.
Jordan Cox led the Saluki charge, finishing second overall out of 63. The senior shot a 71 to bring his total score to 208.
Patrick Scheil also carded a 71 for the day, and classmate Blake Driskell rose into the top 20 with a 73.
Freshman Jake Erickson (Springfield, Ill.) shot a 72 to conclude his collegiate debut, and fellow newcomer Ryan Hudson (Herrin, Ill.), competing as an individual, tallied a 75.
John A. Logan College held onto its lead from day one to finish first among the ten participating teams with an eight-stroke cushion at two-over par. Zack Butler of Eastern Kentucky finished first as an individual with a combined score of 206.
The Salukis will return to the course September 27 when they travel to St. Charles, Ill. for the John Dallio Memorial.
