Softball finishes fall season at the Illinois Collegiate Softball Championships

NORMAL, Ill. - The Southern Illinois softball team went 2-2 during the weekend at the State Farm Illinois Collegiate Softball Championships.
The Salukis made it to the championship game with wins over Eastern Illinois and Illinois State, but fell to DePaul 8-7 in eight innings during the tournament finale.
With the score tied 4-4 at the end of seven against DePaul, the Salukis got a lift from Natalee Weissinger in the top of the eight with a three-run home run but the Blue Demons answered right back.
After scoring one run in the bottom of the eight, a Blue Demon three-run homer with two outs gave them the championship title.
Top performers for the Salukis in the title match were Haley Gorman who went 2-for-4 with three RBIS and a double and Natalee Weissinger 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs while Chelsea Held was 2-for-4 with two runs scored Jayna Spivey was 1-for-3 with a triple and one RBI.
"I'm extremely proud of the way kids fought back to get in the championship game I think we just ran out of gas on the mound but our offense looked good and I'm happy with the results," head coach Kerri Blaylock said.
On Saturday, the Salukis fell in game one to Illinois-Chicago 3-0 before beating the Panthers 10-1 in five innings advancing them to the gold bracket play on Sunday.
The Salukis took down Missouri Valley Conference foe Illinois State 5-4, advancing them to the tournament championship.
This wraps up fall play for the Salukis who finished 5-3 in three tournaments. They will begin their regular season at the Houston Tournament in Houston, Texas on Feb. 11-13.
