CARBONDALE, Ill. - Treg Setty, a 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward from Mason County H.S. in Maysville, Ky, has signed a letter of intent to play for Southern Illinois, head coach Chris Lowery announced late Thursday.
SIU was the first school to offer a scholarship last fall to Setty, and that foresight paid off, as teams such as Notre Dame, Xavier, Vanderbilt and Virginia were later on the trail.
"He had a lot of big-time people after him," Lowery acknowledged. "He verbally committed to us the day after the state tournament and we were very excited because he is a winner. He's a tremendous kid and a very good student."
Lowery said Setty has the skills to play guard at the college level.
"We were looking at him as a wing guard when he first committed, and just because he's grown a few inches doesn't change anything," said Lowery. "He can shoot it, he can pass it, he can handle, and he has a desire to get better."
Setty averaged 14.0 points during his junior season, and besides growing two inches, he added about 20 pounds to his frame.
"He was a guard and he grew," Lowery said. "We haven't had a kid who has been one size when he was recruited and shown up as another. When he gets here, we still think he has a chance to play anywhere from a 2-3-4."
Setty was the third signee in SIU's 2011 class, joining Tony Bryer and Harry Whitt of Fishburne Military Academy.
