Softball splits first day at Combat Classic

MIAMI, Fla. - Southern Illinois opened up the 2010 season at the Combat Classic in Miami, Fla. on Friday.
The Salukis opened with a win over North Florida, 2-1, at the FIU Sports Complex. Junior pitcher Danielle Glosson earned the win over the Osprey's, helping the Salukis to a 1-0 start on the season. Southern scored two runs off six hits, committing no errors.
SIU took on UIC in their second game of the day, but weren't able to hold on as the Flames grabbed a run-ruled 9-1 win over the Salukis. UIC's offense came out strong against Southern Illinois, scoring nine runs off 10 hits. SIU struggled in their second game of the season, scoring only one run off of three hits against the Flames.

Junior pitcher Danielle Glosson threw a complete game striking out 10 batters in the Salukis' first win of the season.
Both teams were quiet until SIU loaded the bases in the third inning and Allie Hanson singled in a run to break a scoreless game.
With a 1-0 lead, Haley Gorman homered to right field to give the Salukis a 2-0 edge. The Ospreys scored in the bottom of the fifth with a homerun from sophomore shortstop Britanie Block.
Gorman went 2-for-4 with one RBI, while Hanson went 1-for-3 recording one RBI in the first contest of the season. This also marked the first matchup in school history between Southern Illinois and Northern Florida.

The Salukis got on the board early when Haley Gorman scored off an RBI single from Katie Wilson to put SIU up 1-0, but the Flames answered quickly, scoring four runs in the top of the second inning.
Trailing 4-1 in the third inning, Mallory Duran singled and advanced to second off a groundout by Gorman, but it wasn't enough to get the Salukis going to gain the lead. UIC did not slow down in the fourth inning, scoring four more runs for an 8-1 lead. The Flames went on to score one more run in the top of the fifth, ending the game in five innings with a final score, 9-1.
Junior pitcher Alex Peters, a transfer from Crowder College, made her debut against the Flames, striking out five batters in five innings pitched. Wilson went 1-for-2 at the plate, tallying one RBI.
With a 1-1 start to the season, the Salukis will be back in action tomorrow as they take on UMass at 11 a.m. (ET) and FIU at 1 p.m. (ET). Live stats for this weekend's tournament can be followed by clicking here.
