Hayes named MVC Track Athlete of the Week

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Southern Illinois junior sprinter/hurdler Meredith Hayes was named the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced late Tuesday.
Hayes becomes the fourth Saluki woman to be named the athlete of the week this season, but the first for the track events. This is her first career athlete of the week award.
The honor comes after she won the 60-meter hurdles at the EIU Friday Night Special with a time of 8.52. She beat competitors from MVC rival schools Illinois State and Indiana State to win the event on Feb. 19.
Hayes has won the 60H in 5-of-7 events this indoor season heading into this weekends MVC Indoor Championships that are being held in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Feb 27-28. The Indianapolis, Ind. native owns the fastest 60H time in the conference, as she ran 8.46 at the Rod McCravy Invitational on Jan. 29.
Southern Illinois was picked by the league coaches to repeat as league champions and the men's team was also voted to win the conference after finishing third in 2009.
