The Salukis and Gamecocks met twice last year in Carbondale, with JSU winning both games of the doubleheader on April 11. Jacksonville State took the first game 8-5 and game two 6-3. Those are the only two times the two schools have ever met.
Southern Illinois is making its first trip to the state of Alabama since 2001, when they played a three-game series at UAB. SIU has a 7-2 record when playing in Alabama.
Seven Saluki freshmen saw action in the season-opening series at Jacksonville State and four of the seven got significant time out on the field or on the mound. The Dawgs lost their first two games of the season at Arkansas State last weekend. The third game in that series was rained out. Arkansas State outscored SIU by 11 runs in the two games.
Junior left-handed pitcher Randy Hoelscher will get his first start of the season in game one of the series on Friday. Hoelscher was arguably SIU's No. 1 pitcher coming out of the fall, but was slowed at the start of the spring with a injury. He was a NJCAA All-American at Springfield College before joining the Salukis this season.
Southern Illinois continues its lopsided schedule to start the year. 12 of SIU's first 17 scheduled game are outside of Carbondale.
The last time the Salukis started 0-2 (2005), they rebounded and won their next five games.
