SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose State used a season-high 21 hits to pound the Southern Illinois baseball team, 18-6, Wednesday night at Municipal Stadium.
The Spartans (5-5) scored seven runs off of seven hits in the second inning alone and scored runs in six innings Wednesday. Third baseman Zack Jones did most of the damage for SJSU. He was 3-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored and four driven in.
SIU (4-7) had 11 hits and two errors on the evening. Senior Aaron Roberts and Tony Lepore along with freshman Austin Montgomery were the only Salukis with two hits on the day.
Montgomery, who entered in the fifth inning, was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Roberts was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and he surpassed the 200 career-hit mark in the game.
Freshman left fielder Nick Johnson was able to extend hit hitting streak to nine-consecutive games. He went 1-for-3 with one run scored and has now hit safely in all 10 games he has played in to start his career.
Right-handed pitcher Aaron Snyder (1-1) picked up the loss for the Salukis in his first career start. The freshman lasted just one and two-thirds of an inning and all seven runs were credited to him in that big Spartan second inning.
San Jose State's Esteban Guzman (1-3) was the winning pitcher in Wednesday's game. The two teams combined to use 13 pitchers in the three-hour and six-minute ballgame.
SIU's first run of the game came in the in third inning. Roberts scored when Michael Stalter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Roberts bunted his way on-base to lead off that third inning, giving him the 200th hit of his career.
SIU did get some offense going late, scoring two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth.
Montgomery had a two-run double to the right field wall in the seventh. Chris Murphy brought home one run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly, Brock Harding plated Murphy with a triple and Brian Bajer brought home Harding with a single through the right side.
The Salukis open up the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament on Thursday with a 8:00 p.m. CT game at Santa Clara.
