DELAND, Fla. - The Southern Illinois softball team dropped its game against Stetson, 2-1, in a one-game matchup on Wednesday.
Stetson's power hitters proved to be too much for the Salukis, as was the Hatters' pitcher, Amanda Lindsey. The senior entered the matchup owning nine of Stetson's 11 wins, along with a .082 ERA.
It was a defensive battle between the Salukis and Hatters as both teams struggled to get on the board early. SIU (13-7) stepped up in the top of the fourth inning to break a scoreless game, earning a 1-0 lead over Stetson (12-9). Second baseman Alicia Garza singled for the team's first hit of the game. Allie Hanson then singled to left field, advancing Garza to third. A sacrifice fly out to center field by Natalee Weissinger would drive in Garza for the first run of the game.
Stetson would attempt a comeback in the bottom of the fourth, as they loaded the bases with one out. The Salukis produced back-to-back outs to end the inning before the Hatters could score. It was the sixth inning, however, when Stetson made their move. Back-to-back home runs put the Hatters' lone runs on the board, just enough to defeat SIU, 2-1. Lindsey's game-tying home run was immediately followed by Jessica's Lokeinsky's solo home run to take the lead.
SIU battled to take the lead in the top of the seventh, but the contest would fall in favor of Stetson. Katie Wilson stepped up to the plate, with Sydney Shelton in scoring position at second. Wilson fought to earn the winning run, but grounded out for the final out of the game.
Danielle Glosson pitched a complete game, giving up only two runs off five hits and striking out three at the plate. The junior is now 6-5 on the season.
The Salukis move to 13-7 as they travel to the South Florida Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. SIU will face Stony Brook, Kennesaw State, Toledo, Penn State and Boston at the three-day tournament beginning on Friday, March 12.
